It's poutine, that ever-popular dish from the Canadian province of Quebec!
Made from French fries topped with brown gravy and cheese curds, the dish is Canada's answer to the American chili cheese fries. According to legend this interesting little prepration first appeared in the late 1950's. One often-cited tale is that of Fernand Lachance, from Warwick, Quebec, which claims that poutine was invented there in 1957; Lachance is said to have exclaimed ça va faire une maudite poutine ("it will make a damn mess"), hence the name.
Canadian or not, these fries are "worth their salt."

looks good...but canada has provinces not states.
ReplyDeleteThanks Anon... while writing this piece I kept saying to myself "provinces..." "provinces..." "provinces..." It must not have been enough to sway my American-centric lexicon. Apologies to any Canadians I may have offended. (the error has now been addressed and corrected in the original piece)
